Noel Gallagher – Shoot A Hole Into The Sun

Noel Gallagher releases the single ‘Dream On’ on March 12^th. It’s the fourth single release from the album Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and as always with Mr Gallagher, the B-Side is worth a listen. It features a song which is included on his collaboration with the Amorphous Androgynous. The full album of 18 songs features completely new material and 3 re-workings of tracks featured on HFB (including this, Shoot A Hole Into The Sun, reworked from If I Had a Gun and played before Noel takes to the stage on his live tour). The song is also briefly featured in the Ride the Tiger video trilogy of If I Had a Gun, The Death of You and Me and AKA What A Life!

It’s fair to say the Amorphous Androgynous (from Manchester, like all good things) are an act that enjoy pushing the envelope of music’s boundaries and it’s not a surprise to find that Noel Gallagher is comfortable around them given his track record without Oasis, with the Chemical Brothers. Check out Let Forever Be and Setting Sun if you need history on that particular avenue, and on the last Oasis album to date there’s a remix of Falling Down.

Falling Down was also given a makeover by Amorphous Androgynous; if you have heard it and stayed with it for the entire twenty two minutes then maybe the second solo offering is for you.

“If you are aware of what the Amorphous Androgynous do, they worked on a remix for me, on the last Oasis record where they managed to squeeze twenty two minutes out of one song. The albums got eighteen tracks on it, some of its vaudeville, some is actual space jazz, kraut rock, soul, funk… and that’s just the first song. It’s the furthest out I’ve ever been, put it that way.

The guys that played on it, to be quite honest I’ve not the faintest idea who half of them were, the Amorphous Androgynous were getting people in. I was walking in the studio some days and there was people there I’d never met before, playing on my songs, it was all pretty mad but it’s all turned out good in the end.” Noel Gallagher, July 2011.
